“We’re going to have a lot of old time things and games for people to enjoy,” said City Clerk Teresa Ferguson, the event organizer. “We’ll have someone making apple cider from fresh apples and many homemade quilt displays by Violette Denney.”
Activities will include lots of old time games, as enjoyed since pioneer times, including sack races, tug of war, watermelon seed spitting, hay bale tossing, turkey shoot, knife throwing and horseshoes. Many events are free, but others have an admission fee. Proceeds this year will go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
Biscuits and coffee or tea will be ready at 6 a.m. Food vendors will start setting up at 8:30 a.m. and activities will start with the 10 a.m. parade through downtown Mt. Zion.
“Everybody’s welcome to march in the parade,” Ferguson said. “There’s no charge. Just be at Mitchell Street by 9:30 a.m., at the latest, and get in line. Somebody will come by to check you in.”
A whole slate of activities and events begin after the parade and continue through late afternoon.
“Mark Crawford, a frontier re-enactor, will be cooking meat over an open fire and will have a display of animal skins,” she said. “He will be telling stories of frontier days to entertain the kids.”
O’Neill Williams, known for his TV and radio shows on the outdoors, will be in the city gym from 1-5 p.m. with taxidermy exhibits, hunting and fishing displays, knives, military and survival gear and gun raffles. Admission will be $3.
The car show will be held after the parade, with a $10 entry fee per car and prizes for the winning vehicles.
“We’ll have a full day of live musical entertainment, starting at 11 a.m., behind the community center,” Ferguson said.
Performers will include Little Creek Bluegrass Band, Peach Cloggers, Fever Performing Arts, Central Middle School Chorus, Dustin Benefield, The Generations iHop and Jonathan Dorsey.
“We’ll have a blue-ribbon pie contest in the community center,” Ferguson said. “Pies must be entered by 10:30 a.m. and judging begins at 11 a.m.”
Cake walks and Bingo, at $1 per card, will be held all day after the pie judging.
Other highlights of this year’s Founder’s Day include:
• quilt raffles and door prize giveaways in the public library;
• kids’ games, family games and turkey shoots (with pellet guns) in the park area;
• petting zoo, pony rides and children’s train rides behind the community center;
• hair and face painting, for $1-5, in front of the community center;
• free frontier re-enactor shows in front of the community center;
• old time photos, catch the pig contest and pie in the face, behind the old elementary school;
• food and craft vendors behind the community center.
