Led by another strong performance from sophomore running back Duranta Dunson, the Braves (4-0, 2-0 Region 5-AA) have scored at least 40 points in each game this season.
“We were really pleased with our defense. We have given up more than we wanted to in a couple of ball games. We really wanted to come back and bounce back and have a good game on defense. We felt like the defense [Friday] night kind of set the tone and played three quarters of pretty good football,” Heard County coach Tim Barron said.
It was Dunson who got things going for HC on Friday night, as his first touch was a 61-yard touchdown run on the Braves’ first play from scrimmage. The sophomore would go on to score on runs of eight yards and 50 yards as the Braves opened up a 21-0 early lead.
Quarterback Jonathan Hunt connected with Damon Pearson for a 41-yard touchdown pass before Dunson scored on a four-yard run, giving Heard County the 35-0 halftime lead and ending Dunson’s night offensively.
In the second half, it was Kendrick getting on the board on its first drive of the half before Hunt scored on a four-yard run to cap the Braves scoring on the night. The Cherokees added another score late in the fourth quarter.
Dunson’s 157 yards and four touchdowns on 10 carries led the Braves’ offense with Hunt adding 21 yards and a score while Torrey Rogers chipped in 41 yards rushing. Defensively, Ronnie Warren and Dilian Bradley combined with Dunson to lead Heard County.
The Braves hit the road next week to face Chattahoochee County.
