During their regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, the Tallapoosa City Council approved their millage rate of 7.365.

According to the city’s 5-year history, this is only a slight increase from previous years. In 2011, the millage was set at 7.348, in 2010 it was 7.27, in 2009 it was set at 7.268, in 2008 it was 7.27, and in 2007 it was 7.3.

Despite the fact the millage rate has risen slightly since 2008, actual revenue for the city has decreased from $798,186 in 2008 to $740,533 in 2011 due to a reduction in home values.

Tallapoosa Mayor William “Pete” Bridges also announced the city had balanced budget of $5,573,992, “with a few dollars extra,” he said.

The council also passed an ordinance regarding municipal court.

“This is the same way we have always done business, so the procedure will remain the same,” Bridgs said, “this is just an ordinance to satisfy the state.”

The city also modified its Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) promissory note and agreement. The city borrowed $574,500 from GEFA to pay for upgrades to automatic meter readers in the city. The resolution added six months to the term of their loan.

A resolution was also passed to donate a former police car, a 2002 Chevy Impala, to the West Georgia Airport Authority to use as a courtesy car. The vehicle is currently a surplus car and is not in use by the city or Tallapoosa Police Department.

The city also passed a resolution to reduce the speed limit on Manning Street.

Currently, the speed limit is 25 mph; however, the resolution reduces that to 15 mph. The resolution states that due to the street’s natural slopes, it is in the best interest of public safety to reduce the speed limit.

The new speed limit will go into effect immediately.
