The Central High School softball team won a pair of games on the opening day of the Callaway Classic in LaGrange, knocking off Upson-Lee, 4-0, and closing out the evening with a 4-3 victory over Hardaway.

The Lady Lions (4-3) got a complete-game shutout from Taylor Funk in the opener against the Lady Knights, with Aubrey Bennett going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

In the nightcap, it was the defense of Cassie Griffin that stole the show, as the Central center fielder make a catch over the fence to rob the Golden Hawks of a home run and also made a diving snag in the gap on what would have been an extra-base hit.

Bennett got the win in the circle for the Lady Lions in the second game.

Central returns to action today at 11:30 a.m. against former region foe Troup.

In other prep softball action from Friday:

The Bowdon High School softball team split a pair of games at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament at the East Carrollton Recreation Complex, defeating LaFayette in eight innings, 5-4, and falling to Pickens County, 3-2.

In the opener, Ember Wood connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game, with Trinity Strickland, Lyric Maze, Madison Dye, Reshay Brewer, Katyln Buchanan, Sydney Boddie and Jackie Tilton all adding one hit apiece.

In the second game, the Red Devilettes (3-2) surrendered three runs in the first inning and couldn’t get them all back, suffering the one-run setback. Strickland was 2-for-4 in that contest.

Bowdon plays a pair of games at the Haralson County Tournament today — against HC at 10 a.m. and Cedartown at noon — before coming back to Carrollton to face the host Lady Trojans at 3 p.m.

Late results from Friday night’s action at Carrollton and the Lady Tiger Invitational at Temple will be in Sunday’s paper.
