Rants & Raves

• I was in the checkout lane today behind a heavily tattoed man, along with his wife and four kids. In his cart was a large order of crab legs, 4 cases of sugary flavored sodas, a host of calorie-heavy TV dinners and a case of Bud Light. He paid for his order with a Georgia Food Stamp card. How has the food stamp program stooped to this level? My husband’s small income supports our family. We easily would qualify for food stamps. Instead, we coupon & shop during sales. We’ve never once bought crab legs. What has happened to our society?

• When the city and county schools combine, and get rid of the double amount of administrators at high salaries, many of the problems of finances will be solved. The county schools are fine. The city system has a superiority complex, and that is hard to fight. And with only a few schools within the city, the problems are not as apparent. Quit blaming school problems on the teachers, and take their places in the school classrooms for a week or two. Then you are freer to complain.

• “Has Woolsey found the missing link to remedy our current crazy government — common sense [vs. NON-sense]? Car-sense. His metaphor of a car rings true, the wheels are wobbling. I too dismiss the political rhetoric, marketing, and incoherence — certain to generate a breakdown. Just give us a manageable constitutional government, overhauled!”

• Why is it that right of ways on North Highway 27 and the West Carrollton area never get cut, even when there are sidewalks that actually do get used, yet, the Greenbelt that is not even finished is mown regularly?

Dear Check Out Line Lady ---WHY I clicked on Rants & Raves is beyond me -- but how in the heck does the School Systems get brought into this? If you are jealous of the city schools --- put your kids there. It's not a superiority thing--it's a PRIDE thing. All schools should have it. If you don't have it in the school your children attend - then find a different one. Or - as your so self righteous and holier than thou - home school them!!!! His tatoo's weren't paid for with food stamps, either. Do people abuse the system? Certainly! Who said he is? I am quite certain that man, or anyone who has posted on this could find something to criticize about you and your choices. Clean out from under your own doorstep and make sure it is spotless before you go after this man. Maybe the beer is to deal with a nagging wife he has at home? Oh - and I AM a wife -not a man before you think that was a sexist comment. Sounds like you judged him from the begining because of his tatoo's. You would be surprised by how many fine upstanding preachers have a tatoo under those suits & ties they wear every Sunday.

Dear checkout line lady,

I agree with the two previous comments to your rant.

There's so much you don't know about that family. You should mind what's in your own cart. They didn't tell you what to buy. Stop being so quick to judge.

You don't need high moral standards, you don't have to be educated about food, and you don't need to pass the test of the fashion patrol to get food stamps. If you choose not to apply for food stamps....that's your choice. We're not judging you.

Regarding what's in the other guy's shopping cart, he definitely did not pay for the beer with food stamps; public assistance is a heavily regulated program, and that's simply not allowed. You seem bitter, in that you counted both his tattoos and his children, along with examining the contents of his cart and certainly finding fault in his choices. Unless you were behind him every time he made a purchase, you aren't getting the whole picture. Check out this blog -- it might make you think differently: http://janedevin.com/2012/07/19/walmart-greeter-condemned/ Your post reminds me of rule #2: 2) "The poor should always keep in mind that they are poor, and therefore undeserving of enjoyment, frivolity, or the keeping any bad habits (no weekend six-packs or potato chips)." Happiness is probably found in monitoring the contents of your OWN cart.

Dear Checkout line lady,

How do you know this wasn't a special family night that this man was purchasing? Maybe it was a "what do you want for dinner" night? So what if he used Food Stamps. They certainly didn't pay for the beer..that came out of his pocket. And from what I know, certain deli items and prepared meat items aren't eligible for food stamp purchases..so maybe he paid for those crab legs, too.

You need to be thankful for what you have and nevermind what someone else does. And while Im at it, if you don't want the sodas, will you buy them for me? I'll drink 'em...proudly.

Sound like a bunch of folk on tax payer dimes. Lady you struck a nerve. I am with you. However when you get responses like, you must be jealous, you know that came from the mind of one of America's leaches that think they are owed something because they breath, people working should have to take care of them and their house full of rug rats. 99 times of of a 100, the rug rats will grow up living the life of Riley of tax payers.
