A boil-water advisory was issued Saturday for some Villa Rica residents who live south of Interstate 20.

The advisory is in effect only for those residents who are customers of the Villa Rica water system. The advisory does not apply to those residents who are customers of the Carroll County Water Authority.

The advisory was issued after a large water main line broke on Highway 61.

Mayor J. Collins said he was notified Saturday morning of the break and that crews had responded.

“But it was a very large water main line, and because of the volume of water coming out, it took them a little longer than we wanted to,” Collins said.

The break drained a water tank below EPA-permitted levels, resulting in the boil-water advisory. Water samples were sent to a lab for testing to ensure that the water is safe. The city should know sometime today when the boil-water advisory can be lifted.

The break was repaired Saturday and water was flowing back into the tank.

Collins said the city wasn’t sure what caused the water line to break, but with the repair, “we shouldn’t have any more issues out of that area.”

But residents, he said, should still boil their water until the ban is lifted.

“We want to apologize to our residents for this inconvenience,” said Collins, who thanked Carrollton Mayor Wayne Garner for offering his city’s help.
