The GSC annually recognizes the league’s top male and female student-athletes — five each — with the awards being based on athletic, academic and extra-curricular achievement during the 2011-12 academic year.
One male and one female from this group will receive the Commissioner’s Trophy, the conference’s most prestigious honor. This honor will be presented at the league’s annual awards banquet on June 25 at the Hilton Birmingham Perimeter Park in Alabama.
Drew was the mainstay on the field for the Wolves in 2012. The senior from Douglas captured his second straight team batting championship with a .347 average, following up on a junior campaign that saw him hit .440 en route to First-Team All-America accolades.
Beyond the field, Drew also excelled in the classroom. He was named to the GSC All-Academic Team this season, complementing his on-field performance with a 3.80 grade point average in Pre-Med/Chemistry.
Wednesday’s honor for Drew is the first such award for a West Georgia student-athlete since 2008. UWG produced a pair of GSC Top Ten honorees that year in Adrienne Clay from softball and Brandon Bennett from men’s golf.
Drew is now a contender to be West Georgia’s first Commissioner’s Trophy since Lonnie Edwards (men’s basketball) captured the honor in 1998. UWG’s only other Commissioner’s Trophy winner was Lisa McGhee (Smith) in women’s basketball in 1985.
