A suspect accused of driving under the influence and charged with vehicular homicide in the death of a Carroll County man was indicted Friday by a Douglas County grand jury.

Francisco Ferrer, 32, has been in custody and denied bond after his arrest following a wreck on Interstate 20 in Douglas County that killed 37-year-old Jason Dale Strickland.

Strickland, who was an EMT, was on his way home from work at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on March 25 when his motorcycle was struck from behind.

Grand jury proceedings are not open to the public, but in previous court hearings Ferrer was said by investigators to have been drunk while driving a Honda Element westbound on I-20 near Lee Road at about 5 a.m. that Sunday.

In a bond hearing it was learned that blood alcohol tests found that Ferrer had a blood alcohol content of .125 when he struck a Harley Davidson ridden by Strickland. The impact ejected Strickland from the motorcycle and into the center travel lane where he was hit by a tractor-trailer truck.

Strickland was pronounced dead on the scene.

When law enforcement responded and made contact with Ferrer, he reportedly appeared to be under the influence.

“He smelled of alcohol on the scene,” Assistant District Attorney Ryan Leonard said at an earlier bond hearing for Ferrer. “He had slurred speech. He failed field sobriety. They took his blood and tests showed it was .125.”

According to investigators’ reports, Ferrer told investigators that he had been with friends at a Fulton Industrial strip club from 9:30 p.m. until the club closed at 3 a.m. After eating at a restaurant, Ferrer was driving home when the accident occurred.

Leonard indicated that records showed that Ferrer had withdrawn $500 from an ATM and had paid his tab at the club in cash. Leonard also said that Ferrer admitted drinking “a beer and shots of Jagermeister and Red Bull.”

Ferrer is presented by attorney Paul White. No hearing date was announced Friday.

This is an ATROSITY to the Family of Jason Strickland and every citizen who drives and lives. Ferrer should have never been allowed out on bond. Jason will never be free from his grave!!! Ferrer has no remorse and has proven that by attacking Jason's name and his reputation online through misleading posts. A dark cloud fell over west ga. when Ferrer left that jail. I can only pray for Strickland's family, his children and society that they put this Demon in the Hell he deserves and leaves him there. When will justice be served and how can the courts allow him to walk around when Jason's body was not even allowed an open casket burial??? His only crime was getting off from work from "Saving" lives while this Filth was out partying at a 'strip' club, eating and drinking and taking lives. The Devil is Surely alive and well taking care of his own. Please hear the pain of Jason's Family!!!
