The Trojans defeated Lumpkin County 4-0 in the first round last week, and will continue playing at home until the third round. Something Trojan coach Ryan Scroggin feels is an advantage.
“I like being at home, I’d much rather be at home than have to travel,” Scroggin said. “Of course the kids at home playing in front of their family and friends will be very beneficial for us.”
Carrollton also continues to get good news on No. 2 singles player Mark Swindle’s ankle.
“It’s improving. It’s still been sore at times, but I spoke with him yesterday and he said it’s improving a lot each and every day,” Scroggin said. “So I think he will be OK.”
Swindle suffered a high ankle sprain before the region tournament, but was up 6-1, 4-1 in his first round match last week when it was called because Carrollton clinched the victory.
The Trojans will look to erase the memory of last year’s second-round defeat to St. Pius, and are using the loss as motivation to win this year.
“The kids last year, we got beat by St. Pius in the same round last year,” Scroggin said. “They’re hungry, very hungry to advance to the next round and I think they’ll play inspired tennis [today].”
Scroggin has stressed that the competition will continue to increase as they move further into the tournament. But his doubles teams will get quite a task from Dalton.
“Dalton is very good, both of their doubles teams are undefeated. But I feel like the schedule we played is going to help our kids,” Scroggin said. “That’s why we schedule the schedule we do, because we know later on in the state tournament you’re going to face good teams.”
The Trojans and Dalton will begin play at 2 p.m. at Carrollton.
Carrollton girls:
The Carrollton girls tennis team will continue its postseason today as well, as the Lady Trojans will travel to face No. 6 Allatoona in the second round today.
No. 5 Carrollton rebounded from its loss in the Region 6-AAA finals match against LaGrange with a 4-1 victory over Gainesville to open state tournament play.
The Lady Trojans got wins from No. 1 singles Rebecca Buchanan (6-1, 6-0), No. 3 singles Kendall Pence (6-0, 6-0), No. 1 doubles Sydney Gaston/Kat Burger (6-1, 6-2) and No. 2 doubles Bethany DeWitt/Katey Brooks (6-2, 7-6) in the first round.
Now Carrollton will travel about an hour north to Acworth to take on the Region 7-AAA champions. The match between Carrollton and Allatoona will begin at 4 p.m.
