The University of West Georgia women’s basketball team rebounded from a tough outing at Benedict on Monday with a 61-45 road victory over Augusta State University on Thursday afternoon at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The Wolves (4-7), who struggled from the field on Monday, shot 47 percent from the floor against the Lady Jaguars (1-9), led by a 15-point effort from senior shooting guard ReNate Lopez, who went 5-for-8 from downtown in the contest to score all her points from beyond the arc.
West Georgia captured its first lead a little more than five minutes into the contest, as Charlease Williams hit a lay-up at the 14:56 mark to put UWG for good at 8-7.
Near the midway point of the opening half, Lopez found her groove, hitting a trio of treys to close out the half and push the Wolves’ lead to 28-17 at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, ASU went on a brief run, forcing West Georgia coach Craig Roden to call a timeout and regroup his squad.
Following the timeout, UWG would outscore the Lady Jaguars 31-20 the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Lopez tied a career-high with her 15 points, while Williams and junior forward Kim Jones both finished with 11 points.
West Georgia returns home on Saturday and Sunday for a battle with Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello, respectively. Tip-off on each day is set for 1:30 p.m.
