“We’re starting a new tradition here. I think they’ll all come back. The coaches were happy and pleased about it. Everybody ran great times. It was good,” UWG coach Tim Brooks said. “It went off smoothly.”
In the first race, the men’s 8K, Kennesaw State took the team title, while the Wolves finished in fifth place.
Dan Moffit continued his strong start to the season, as he has been the top UWG finisher in all three races of the year, and he placed 11th overall in a time of 25 minutes and 12 seconds on Saturday. Behind him was Robert Fensterer (25:55) in 15th and David Trey Gray (26:33) in 21st. Also scoring points for UWG was Anatoli Ejigu (27:48) and Isaiah Bell (28:05).
Along with the winning as a team, Kennesaw State also had the individual champion, Nabil Hamid, who completed the course in 24:01.
“Fifth place is pretty good given we had 12 teams there. It was good,” Brooks said. “Guys could have ran a little faster, but it was good.”
On the women’s side, it was another Division I team taking the championship, as Georgia State won the inaugural 5K as the top four finishers and six of the top 10 came from the Lady Panthers. Katharine Showalter (17:15) took the individual title.
For the Wolves, it was again freshman Tiffany Wommack leading the way, as she finished in 13th place overall at 19:04. Brooke Wommack (19:57) placed 18th and Briana Crawford (20:12) finished 20th.
Outside of the top 20 for West Georgia was Rachel Hull, Casey Brown and Elyse Bolleau coming in 24th, 25th and 26th, respectively.
“The girls, we beat Georgia Southern and third place is right where they should have been. They had two D-I schools ahead of them and the rest we definitely should beat,” Brooks said. “I was really proud of the girls.”
Both teams will take next weekend off before traveling to Augusta State on Oct. 5.
