Donald Levans, commander of American Legion Post 143 and a Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Association member, will serve as master of ceremonies and deliver welcoming remarks.
“A part of the program will pay tribute to 15 sheriff’s deputies who are veterans and have recently had plaques placed in their names on the memorial wall,” Levans said.
The event will be at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.
Langley has been Carroll County Sheriff since 2001, currently serving his third term. He is a graduate of the Georgia Police Academy, the 2000 Georgia Sheriffs Elect Academy and the 2002 National Sheriffs Institute.
After graduating from Bowdon High School, Langley began his law enforcement career in 1980 as a radio operator with the Bowdon Police Department. In 1981, he became a Carroll County deputy under Sheriff Hugh Lee Lambert. He was promoted through the ranks to sergeant of the uniformed patrol division, and later to sergeant in the criminal investigations division under Sheriff Jack T. Bell.
Langley was appointed deputy warden for the Carroll County Prison in 1995 and was appointed interim sheriff in 1996 to replace Bell, who resigned to run for chairman of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners.
Langley is married and has two daughters.
The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park organization offers two programs each year to honor Carroll County veterans. On the Saturday nearest Memorial Day in May, the program centers on veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The Veterans Day program is held on the Saturday nearest the Nov. 11 Veterans Day holiday and is dedicated to all veterans.
Levans said any veterans, or veterans’ families, having ties to Carroll County, are invited to purchase wall plaques for the park. Those interested should contact Norris Garrett, 770-836-1111.
“The Veterans Memorial Park exists due to the tremendous cooperation of many people, businesses and organizations, both public and private,” Levans said. “It’s located on county land and is operated and maintained by the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Association Inc.”
The Veterans Day program will be at10 a.m.
The Carroll County Symphony Wind Ensemble will play patriotic tunes before the beginning of the program and after its conclusion. Other activities on the program include an invocation by Bruce Holley, the Veterans Memorial Park; laying of the wreath and pledge by the Carrollton High ROTC; and national anthem and singing of “God Bless America” by Joe Garrett.
Norris Garrett, president of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, will introduce the speaker. The program will conclude with the playing of Taps by veteran Larry Jennings.
Visitors will be able to tour the park following the ceremonies.
In case of rain, the event will move to The Amp, Carrollton’s amphitheater off the square downtown.
