The Douglas County Board of Education (BOE) will begin its search for a new school superintendent with a Monday called meeting.

The 6 p.m. meeting in the school system’s central office board room, 9030 Highway 5, Douglasville, will include a presentation from the Georgia School Boards Association about its search program services.

Current School Superintendent Don Remillard announced at the Oct. 19 BOE meeting that he will retire on May 31 after 38 years’ service in the school system.

“We want this entire process to be very transparent with as much public input as possible,” said BOE Chairman Jimmy Bartlett. “There will be a time for public input at this meeting and we encourage the public to attend.”

Bartlett said there will also be future opportunities for public input as the superintendent selection process continues.

“Mr. Remillard has done an excellent job serving as our superintendent, and it’ll be difficult to find a person of his caliber to replace him.” said Bartlett. “Since the role of superintendent is not only important to students, parents and staff, but encompasses the entire community, public input is needed in the process.”

He said an effective data collection strategy will be used during the search process which will include as much public feedback as possible.

Remillard joined the Douglas County School System as a math teacher in 1972 after graduating from Berry College in Rome, Georgia. He started his career at Douglas County High School but moved to Lithia Springs High School to be part of its first faculty and spent most of his teaching career there.

He was assistant principal at both Douglas County High and Lithia Springs High and CVAE coordinator.

He was promoted to the central office in 1993 as director of vocational instruction and was later director of secondary administration. He became the associate superintendent in 1997 and superintendent in 2003.
