Calling it a "a good start" to the season, Chapel Hill coach Chad Miller said he was pleased with the effort from his team in a quad meet on Friday at Boundary Waters Aquatic Center.

The Panthers finished second with 191 points to Newnan's 346 points in the first full squad meet of 2012-13. Alexander was third with 182 points and New Manchester had 54 points.

Chapel Hill had four swimmers win five events to pace the team to the second place finish.

Freshman Joshua Thruston was the only Panther swimmer to win multiple events when he captured first in the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard backstroke.

Another freshman, Kamaria Mahone won the 100 back and placed second in the 200 I.M. event. Mahone had a state qualifying time in the 200 I.M. to add to a building resume. Last week, she made state cuts in the 100 back and 100 butterfly at the Big Cat Invitational in Jonesboro.

Chapel Hill senior Bri Mayo won the 50 freestyle in 30.68 seconds.

The Panthers other first place finisher was Zahir Eaton, who won the 100 breaststroke.

"I'm very happy with the team," Miller said. "They did a great job. We were missing a couple swimmers, and they would have helped the team, but overall, it was a good job."

Alexander had a pair of swimmers win multiple events.

Junior Bailee Spivey won the 100 free in 57.78 seconds and the 100 breast. Last week in Jonesboro, Spivey made her state cut in the 100 free.

Sophomore Lindsay Dowling made a state cut in the 200 I.M. after finishing in 2:19.81 to win the event. She had a time of 1:03.96 to win the butterfly and reach a state cut.

Spivey and Dowling led both the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams to wins.

Caleb Rogers of Alexander was the only other Douglas County swimmer to win an event. The freshman went 1:12.4 to win the 100 freestyle.

After breaking next week for the Thanksgiving holidays, all five county teams will be in action on Nov. 30 at the aquatic center. New Manchester, Lithia Springs and Alexander will compete against each other while Chapel Hill will take on Douglas County.

Miller said he anticipates more swimmers will make state cuts in the coming meets. The state meet will be held on February 8-9.

"It is very early in the season, and we have quite a few swimmers that are right on the bubble," Miller said. "We have a lot of potential."
