COLUMBUS — The Bowdon High School football team scored early and often against Spencer on Friday night at Kinnett Stadium, not letting up until it posted a 61-28 Region 5-AA victory.

Bowdon (7-1, 5-1 Region 5-AA) scored on its first seven possessions of the game and didn’t throw a pass the entire game, instead rolling up 488 rushing yards to control the game. The Red Devils scored before their offense even got on the field, as Logan Freeman picked off Spencer quarterback Tarvaraska Davis and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown just 1:32 into the game.

Following a Spencer punt, Bowdon took over on its own 46-yard line and marched 54 yards in 10 plays for its first offensive touchdown of the game. Chris Keith finished the drive with a nine-yard run and Avery McWhorter’s extra point made it 14-0 Bowdon with 3:01 to go in the opening period.

The Greenwave (2-5, 2-3) drove on its next possession to Bowdon’s 29, but Marcus Thurman stepped in front of a Davis pass and returned the interception 76 yards to the Spencer 19-yard line. Three plays later, Keith scored again on a four-yard run and Bowdon led 21-0 after one quarter.

Thurman did it again on the Greenwave’s next drive, picking off Davis in the end zone to snuff out a potential scoring drive. Bowdon then went 80 yards in just four plays and Darnell Holland closed out the march with a six-yard touchdown run to give the Red Devils a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Spencer finally was able to finish off a drive on its next possession, going 72 yards in nine plays and taking 4:18 off the clock before Davis scored on a 10-yard run.

Bowdon got one final touchdown before the break, though, going 62 yards in five plays before Pearce Kirk scored on a four-yard run to put the Red Devils up comfortably at halftime.

Bowdon had 212 yards of offense, all on the ground, despite having the ball for only 8:33 of the opening 24 minutes. Keith led the way with 120 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

The Red Devils tacked on an 18-yard touchdown run by Holland and a three-yard William Drummond touchdown run in the third, then touchdown runs of 19 and five yards by Kirk in the fourth.

The Red Devils return to action next week at rival Bremen.
