Taylor McIntyre made only one field goal on Tuesday, but her running bank shot with 2:15 remaining in overtime proved to be the final salvo in the Haralson County High School girls basketball team’s dramatic 35-34 come-from-behind win at Bowdon.

The victory was the fifth straight for the Rebelettes (5-0) to start the season.

“Right now I think we’re just totally in shock that we even got the opportunity to get to overtime as poorly as we played,” HC coach Cindy Moore said.

Even so, Moore was grateful that her team was able to battle back for a win after trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter.

“It wasn’t a pretty win. I don’t think our girls would tell you that they felt like we played very well,” Moore said. “But, you know, in the past that game would not have been a Haralson County win.”

Things hadn’t looked so good for Haralson County when the Red Devilettes’ Sydney Boddie hit a lay-up in the first minute of the fourth quarter to put Bowdon (0-3) up 30-20.

Three made free throws in four attempts for Rebelette sophomore Ciera Champion and then a 1-for-2 effort at the charity stripe for Red Devilette freshman Jacole Stephens left it at still 31-23 in Bowdon’s favor with 3:30 remaining in regulation.

That’s when Haralson County junior Ashley Wyatt made a series of game-changing plays that ultimately sent the contest into overtime.

First, Wyatt hit a 3-pointer to cut it to five with about 3:15 left. Then, she stole the ball and made a basket all in almost the same motion and was fouled on the play with 1:55 left. After a Red Devilette timeout, Wyatt completed the three-point play by sinking the free throw to cut it to 31-29.

A few plays later, Wyatt scored on a putback with just less than 45 seconds to play, tying the game 31-31.

In a bang-bang play, Wyatt was called for a foul with 3.5 seconds left, sending Bowdon freshman Lyric Maze, who scored 10 on the night to lead her team, to the foul line for a 1-and-1. Maze missed the free throw, and the game went to overtime, where McIntyre ultimately hit the winner.

“She’s our steadying force,” Moore said. “You know, we want Taylor to have the ball down the stretch.”

For McIntyre, it was her first points since a free throw in the opening minute of the game, and she finished with three points.

Boddie had a wide-open look for a long two-pointer in the final seconds but missed, and Stephens missed a putback at the buzzer.

Wyatt led the Rebelettes with 13 points, while Champion had seven and Ivory Smith added six.

Senior Lindsey Rooks had nine points for the Red Devilettes, and Stephens added seven. And even though her team played much better than in a 55-43 loss to Haralson County on Dec. 1, Bowdon coach Melissa Ring said the close loss was still a tough one to take.

“We made dramatic improvements,” Ring said. “But it hurts to lose when you have a lead that late.”

She’ll look for her team to build off a performance that was strong at times.

“This is another experience, another building block to get to that point where things don’t faze us mentally,” Ring said.

Bowdon boys 59, Haralson County 35: Just when the Red Devils (3-0) appeared to be asserting themselves and took a 21-12 lead, the Rebels (0-5) ran off nine straight points to tie it 21-21.

“The kids just showed their resiliency,” HC coach Whitt Brown said.

By halftime, Bowdon had a 30-24 lead, but it was still only 36-29 about midway through the third quarter.

From there, though, the Red Devils’ pressure defense and transition offense, particularly inside, was too much to handle as they used a 19-2 run to push it to 55-31 in the closing minutes of the game.

Bowdon coach Vic Coggins said the second-half surge began with his defense.

“The second half, I thought our defense was much, much better,” Coggins said. “We played harder. We played smarter was the big thing.”

Red Devil senior Darious Moten led all scorers, as he tallied 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds, and junior Cedric Strickland added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Senior Terell Thornton had eight points and six rebounds.

Even though his team came out strong after the half, Coggins hopes his team learns it has to take every team seriously, something he said Bowdon didn’t do Tuesday against a Rebel team it beat 63-29 a week earlier.

“It’s kind of one of those lessons that, you know, when you kind of win a game by a pretty big margin the first game, you’ve got to show up and play the second time and play hard,” Coggins said.
