Now that the holiday season is coming to a close, city and county residents have many free options for putting their used Christmas trees into the recycling network.
These choices include the Douglas County Cedar Mountain Landfill, the annual “Bring One for the Chipper” campaign and curb side pickup by the city of Douglasville.
All trees should be stripped of decorations and lighting. And, of course, recycling is only for live trees.
“We’ve had people drop off artificial trees for recycling,” said Chan Weeks, director of Keep Douglasville Beautiful, who sponsors the “Bring One for the Chipper.”
People can start bringing their trees to the landfill Saturday for grinding into mulch. The county program will continue through Jan. 31. Landfill hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, according to Gary Jenkins, landfill director.
“We’ll be closed on New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 18,” Jenkins said. “We’re not able to offer the free seedlings this year to people who bring in trees. However, we do offer free mulch to county residential customers.”
The Home Depot on Douglas Boulevard is again working with Keep Douglasville Beautiful and Keep Georgia Beautiful on the Chipper campaign.
“While the actual chipping event will be on Jan. 9 at Home Depot, you can take your tree there now,” Weeks said. “They have started a pile of trees on the left hand side of the parking lot.”
She said the chipping day event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in The Home Depot parking lot.
“Volunteers will be there to help you unload your tree to be recycled,” she said. “Trees will be chipped into mulch onsite and the mulch will be bagged and given away free. You don’t have to bring in a tree to get the mulch.”
Weeks said mulch may also be available after Jan. 9.
“People can call 770-920-3005 to see if any mulch is still available,” she said.
In a related recycling project, people can also take gift wrap, cards, shirt boxes, cardboard boxes, plastic, aluminum and other holiday items to The Home Depot on Jan. 9 only, Weeks said.
City of Douglasville residents can put their trees out on the curb for pickup after Christmas.
“The city will pick them up and take them to be mulched,” she said.
