Qualifying for municipal elections begins on Monday morning, though, according to Carroll County Elections Supervisor Patti Brown-Traylor, it’s unlikely there will be as many candidates as there would be in a presidential election year.
Off-year elections don’t normally draw as many voters. At the same time, they don’t draw as many candidates as elections that coincide with presidential elections. This is especially true, Brown-Traylor said, considering that many people don’t have much of an interest in city politics.
“I’d say there are fewer people who qualify for municipal offices,” she said. “There just seems to be less interest in municipal elections than county, state and, of course, federal elections.”
At the same time, she said, her office has received a dozen or so phone calls in recent weeks from people hoping to qualify, and on Monday they’ll have their chance.
To qualify for a municipal seat in the county, a person must have been a resident in Carroll County for the last year, be at least 21 years old and be a registered voter. Those meeting the general requirements will also have to fill out the necessary paperwork and pay the qualifying fee, which ranges from $126 to qualify for the Carrollton City Schools Board of Education to $15 to qualify for the Mt. Zion City Council.
Qualifying begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and ends at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the David Perry County Administration Building at 423 College St. in Carrollton.
The seats that will be on the ballet this November are as follows:
• Carrollton City Council Ward 1, held by Gerald Byrd.
• Carrollton City Council Ward 2, vacated several months ago by Rusty Gray.
• City Schools Ward 1, held by Gregory Dothard on a temporary basis following the death of Joshua Mabry last year.
• City Schools Ward 2, held by Joe McGinnis.
• City Schools Ward 3, held by Kelly Glanton.
• City Schools At Large, held by Lynn Kress.
• Mt. Zion City Council Ward 3, held by Kathy Albright.
• Mt. Zion City Council Ward 4, held by Donald Newman.
• Temple Mayor, held by Rick Ford.
• Temple City Council Ward 1, held by Larry Estvanko.
• Temple City Council Ward 2, held by Larry Mann.
• Villa Rica City Council Ward 3, held by Perry Amidon.
• Villa Rica City Council Ward 4, held by Joey Kelley.

• Whitesburg City Council Ward 2, held by Harvey Bowen.
• Whitesburg City Council Ward 3, held by Lucy Gamble.
