Mt. Zion finishes second in LaGrange

A strong start to the season continued for the Mt. Zion High School wrestling team on Saturday, as it placed second at the Gary Silva Classic hosted by LaGrange, which honored the longtime official who passed away last year.

The Eagles picked up three first-place finishes from Javier Martinez at 132 pounds, Fernando Valles (145) and Will Sizemore (hwy.); a second-place finish by Ashton Robinson (106); three third-place finishes by Hunter Smith (120), Tryston Cash (160) and Ben Sizemore (172) and a pair of fourth-place finishes from Efren Valles (138) and Nathan Waley (195).

Mt. Zion finished second to only Smith's Station, a AAAAAA school out of Alabama.

"It was tough, but our guys came through," MZ coach Michael Cleek said. "Got good mat time and hope it carries over into area duals next week."

In other prep wrestling action from the weekend:

The Central High School wrestling team had a pair of grapplers place at the Fayette County Christmas Classic, with senior Jarrett Thomas taking second place at 160 pounds, finishing 3-1 with his lone loss being a controversial one. Meanwhile, freshman Timothy Duffey turned in a sixth-place finish at 126 pounds, going 5-3.

In prep basketball action from Saturday:

Temple boys 71, Pepperell 67:The Tigers (2-9) picked up a win over Pepperell, with four players reaching double-figures offensively in the four-point win.

Along with Trevor Shell's game-high 25 points, Elijah McFarland scored 15, while Rashaan Dobbs added 13 points and Briahious McPherson chipped in 11 points.

Temple returns to the court on Thursday, as it travels to Mt. Zion for a 7:30 p.m. game.
