The West Georgia Technical College football program recently announced the signing of 74 high school players and transfers in its inaugural class.

The official start of West Georgia Tech football is slated for the fall of 2014, but the foundation and groundwork for the program will be built by this incoming class, marking another historic milestone for West Georgia Tech Athletics.

“We’d like to welcome our incoming student-athletes, which will make up the inaugural football team for the Golden Knights,” noted WGTC President Dr. Skip Sullivan. “These young men will make history for our school and for this program as they take the field for the first time in a Golden Knights’ uniform. We know there is a lot of work left to be done as we prepare for the 2014 opener, but we are very confident that these young men will perform on the football field and, most importantly, in the classroom.”

Walter Dunson, WGTC head football coach and athletic director, said the incoming class is filled with promising talent.

“More than 30 of these players had opportunities with NCAA major conference and BCS schools, and several more have the ability to play at non-BCS schools and Division II schools, as well. This team is loaded with speed and size,” Dunson said.

Dunson indicated the immediate thing that stands out about the class is the talent level on the defensive side of the ball, with as many as six defensive backs signed that were on several NCAA Division I team boards.

Offensively, Dunson said the class includes two quarterbacks, which both threw for more than 1,500 yards and rushed for nearly 1,000 yards as high school seniors.

“We have size and speed both outside and slot receivers,” Dunson added. “We’ll play fast on offense, and stretch teams vertically. So we were really looking for speed and athleticism across the board, and especially at the receiver position. We have size on both lines, too.”

Dunson isn’t done with the recruiting process as he puts the pieces of the team together. The Golden Knights held a tryout on Saturday at Heard County High School in Franklin, where the team will play its home games in the fall of 2014.

“I’m excited about this group. We will have several scrimmages this fall where the public will have an opportunity to see our players,” Dunson said.
