Six female Villa Rica High School students charged with affray and disrupting a public school appeared before a Juvenile Court judge Friday. The students were allegedly involved in a fight on school property around 8:30 a.m. Thursday as a result of a dispute over a male student.
Four other girls, ages 17 and 18, were also arrested, but will be tried as adults.
“I don’t know what all has broken loose but I’m not happy,” Judge Dan Camp said. “I’m not going to have this type of activity.”
Two of the six juveniles who were detained Thursday were already on probation for the same charges. Those two students are still being held while the other four were released on three conditions. Camp ordered that they stay off school property, not participate in any school-related activities and maintain a no-contact rule with the other girls involved, with the exception of two girls who are sisters.
The agreement was met with some protest because two of the girls are cousins who planned to be together on Thanksgiving, but Camp maintained his decision.
There was an official hearing for one of the students on probation, but the hearing for the other student who is on probation was deferred until Monday because she did not have a lawyer present.
During the Friday hearing, Camp said this was the third time in six months he had seen the girl, who he had placed on probation in July after a similar incident.
“When I tell you probation, your freedom is limited,” Camp said. “That means staying at home if that’s what keeps you out of trouble.”
Citing the previous incidents, Camp ordered the young woman to be detained until Monday.
The issue between the girls started in late October when the same group of female students reportedly got into a fight in Carrollton, according to witness statements during the hearing. The Monday after that initial incident, the students were warned not to bring the fight to school or they would be charged with affray.
Then on the night of Nov. 18, the young woman at the hearing reportedly drove to another student’s home, asked her to come outside, threatened her and hit her with a belt. After being warned not to return to school, the victim stayed at home on Nov. 19, the day of the larger fight.
On the morning of Nov. 19, Villa Rica Principal Dennis Brown said he was warned about the incident the night before. Just after meeting with support staff about the situation, Brown said a fight involving three of the students began.
While Brown and other school staff broke the group apart, other fights broke out around the school.
“We were putting down fights everywhere,” Brown said. “As soon as we got one under control, another started.”
Finally, nearly an hour later, police assisted in subduing the students involved.
All of the girls will be suspended until further notice or when the incident is resolved, according to Brown.
Camp set additional hearing dates for Nov. 23 and Dec. 22.
“I hope to resolve all of this before Christmas,” Camp said.
