The Tigers are fresh off their second win of the season and with the subdivisions deciding to join together to for one region, DC is in a prime spot to reach the state playoffs.
Douglas County is currently in fourth place, the last spot for a state placement. They are 1-1 in region games, with a loss to Langston Hughes (34-7) on Oct. 12, and a win against Westlake (21-6) last week.
The Tigers are currently ahead of both Tri-Cities and Westlake in the standings. Both teams are 0-2 in the region.
Newnan is currently third in the region standings with a 1-1 region record, and a 5-2 overall record. East Coweta holds the second spot with a 2-0 region record and 3-4 overall record. Langston Hughes is in first with a 2-0 region record and 6-1 overall record.
On paper, the Cougars of Newnan hold a slight advantage on offense and defense going into tonights game. Newnan is averaging 25.1 points per game on offense and are allowing 22.7 points per game on defense. Douglas County is averaging 18.9 on offense and 27.9 on defense.
Newnan is led by a gifted quarterback in Bailey Bryant. Bryant is a rare throwing QB in the high school rankings. He has competed 66-of-99 passes for 997 yards and 10 touchdowns so far in 2012. He has allowed only two picks.
The Cougars also have a more than capable running back in Quinton Dix. Dix has 462 yards on 1-2 attempts, with four TD’s.
If DC hopes to defeat Newnan, they will also need to stop Tray Matthews on both sides of the ball. Matthews is the team’s leading receiver with 23 catches for 491 yards. He is also second on the team in tackles with 45, while playing defensive end.
Tonaris Portress will also be a threat on defense. As a linebacker, he leads the team with 57 tackles.
Newnan has a solid extra point kicker in Tyler Mulvenna. He has made 23-of-24 point afters and is 100-percent in field goal kicks, making all five attempts, but none have been more than 19 yards.
The offense off DC will once again be led into battle by quarterback Ellis Richardson.
Richardson will match up pass-for-pass with Bryant. After last week’s win, he has now surpassed 1,000 yards on the season. However, he has been more mistake prone, completing less passes (70-of-111) and throwing 10 interceptions to nine touchdowns.
However, Richardson is a dual threat QB, that can also threaten with his feet. He has rushed 80 times for 231 yards and scored three times.
Richardson will be helped on offense by receiver Anthony Graves and receiver/running back Anthony Garner. Graves has a team high 25 catches for 363 yards and three scores. Garner has 20 catches for 344 yards and 55 rushes for 288 yards. He has a combined eight touchdowns.
The DC quarterback has also been helped defensively by the improvement of the O-Line.
“We are not where we want to be but we have made tramendous strides,” said DCHS Head Coach Jason Respert.
Defensively, Douglas County will turn to Terrell Gibson and Jeffrey McMichael. Gibson leads the team with 40 total tackles this season. McMichael has 33.
If the Tigers get by Newnan tonight, then they will get East Coweta in a region contest on Nov. 2 and then finish off with region foe Tri-Cities on Nov. 9.
Game time tonight set for 7:30 p.m. Newnan High School is located at 190 LaGrange Street, Newnan, Ga. 30263.
