The Fayette Tigers (2-7 overall, 0-2 subregion) have also struggled this season.
Both Alexander and Fayette hold nearly identical wins over Columbus. The Tigers beat the winless Blue Devils 41-7 on Oct. 11, while the Cougars won 43-7 last Friday. Fayette does hold a win over region opponent LaGrange, 38-35, while Alexander fell to the Grangers 42-28 on Oct. 12.
Statistically, Fayette boasts a better offense in 2012 than the Cougars, averaging 20.7 points per game. Alexander is scoring 14.4 points per game. Both defenses have been almost identical. The Tigers are allowing 34.9 points per game and the Cougars are allowing 34.8.
Fayette is coming off their second loss in a row, losing to Shaw last week, 34-23. Over their past four games, their offense has gotten much better, leading to a 2-2 record after starting the season 0-5. The offense scored, 41, 38, 37, and 23 points over the four-game stretch. The defense has still struggled, allowing 7, 35, 47, and 34 points.
Fayette is led by quarterback Jason Willams, a sophomore who can threaten with his arm or his feet. In a loss two weeks ago to region foe Troup County, Williams ran for two scores and also passed for two. His favorite targets have been Antonio Messick and Ashton Jackson. The Tigers also have a more than capable running back in Vincent Bey.
“[Their quarterback] is a good athlete and a good leader,” said AHS coach Matt Combs. “They run the Option and the Veer. Their tailbacks are not bad either.”
Alexander is coming of a dominating victory over region punching bag Columbus, who is winless thus far. The Cougars routed Columbus with their best offensive performance of the year. All three AHS QB’s got into the game, including Brian Dansereau, Evan Wood, and Baylor Whitfield. Dansereau was also a key player as a receiver in the game.
The running game led by Jordan Paden, and the kicking game led by Andrew Chandler, also did its part in the victory.
“We were able to get a lot of young players out there and gain a lot of experience,” Combs said. “The kids deserved that win. They have worked hard on getting better every week.”
Combs credits his offensive line for making big improvements through the second half of the season, and the defense is doing a better job tackling in spaces, though Combs added that there is room for improvement.
Though neither team can advance past the last regular season game this Friday, the game could have implications going into next season. Momentum is everything in sports, and it is always a more relaxing offseason when the last game is a win.
“When playing a team like this, we have to play assignment football,” Combs said. “We want to get another win and send the seniors out right.”
