The win gives the Red Devilettes (17-9, 7-0 Region 5-AA) an automatic berth in the Class AA state playoffs and home field for the championship round of the region tournament.
"It's one of those things we wanted to finish the region as the No. 1 seed and we had that opportunity when we beat Bremen and Heard [County]. That made it possible for us to win that thing. I don't think the girls ever doubted whether they could or not. They believed in themselves and it was time to get the job done," Bowdon coach Ralph Sanders said.
The first region game for Bowdon came against Region 5-AA veterans and, at the time, the No. 2 ranked team in Class AA in the state the Lady Braves. The Red Devilettes picked up the 3-1 win and never looked back in region play. That win gave the Red Devilettes the confidence to know they could beat anyone they lined up against.
"I think that's probably what got us started. I went over, and some of the other players went with us, and we watched [Heard County] play Carrollton the night before. I think the fact that Carrollton hit them so well was one of the things that got our confidence going. Then, when we shut them down offensively, and hit the ball real well I think our girls ... they proved [they could play with anybody if they came to play]," Sanders said.
The Red Devilettes have one final regular season game on Tuesday at home against Kendrick before the Region 5-AA Tournament begins at the end of the week. The first two games of the tournament will be played at Bremen on Thursday before it switches to Bowdon for the semifinal, final and consolation games on Saturday.
The Carrollton Junior High School golf teams had a pair of matches this past week, hosting Haralson County and Bay Springs on Thursday at Sunset Hills Country Club and taking on Odyssey Charter School out of Newnan this past Saturday at Fairfield Plantation.
