The Bremen High School football team used a pair of touchdown runs by Christian Prichard and a Josh Golden field goal to upset host Wilkinson County, 17-14, on Friday night in the first round of the Class A state playoffs in Irwinton.

It was a ball-control effort for the Blue Devils, as Bremen coach Ricky Tolleson said his team had the ball for 32 of the 48 minutes in the win.

“It was one of the greatest team victories that we’ve had at Bremen,” Tolleson said.

Prichard’s second touchdown came about midway through the fourth quarter, and a late interception by Nick Cash helped seal the victory, the seventh straight first-round triumph for the Blue Devils (7-4), who will play Holy Innocents’ next Friday at Riverwood’s stadium in Atlanta.

Prichard, who had more than 150 yards rushing for the game, scored the first touchdown of the game in the opening quarter as Bremen went ahead 7-0.

Ricky Jones’ 35-yard scoring run in the second quarter tied the game 7-7 before Golden’s field goal gave the Blue Devils a 10-7 halftime lead on the Warriors (8-3).

Wilkinson County took its only lead on a 35-yard scoring run from Bernardis Hughes in the third quarter, pushing ahead 14-10 before Prichard’s decisive run in the fourth quarter.

Another key defensive play for Bremen came on a Jake Cash interception as the Warriors were trying to up their lead to double digits.

Tolleson said the Blue Devil fans, assistant coaches and players all played an important role in the win.

“Our kids fought. Our coaches had a great, great game plan,” Tolleson said. “And our kids fought every minute of that game.”

It wasn’t a victory without adversity, but Tolleson said his guys came through when it counted.

“We found a way to win the game,” Tolleson said. “We stuck it down their throat.”
